Dental Cleanings and Exams

Our continuing care/periodontal maintenance program is designed to help our patients maintain optimal oral health. As well as the dental scaling and polishing that make up the regular cleanings which we provide, we also incorporate patient education regarding oral disease and prevention. All of these things fall under the category of preventive dentistry, which we consider to be very important.

The dental exam is critical to your ongoing oral health and only your dentist can perform this. The exam consists, in part, of the dentist looking inside your mouth. In the past, you may not have ever realized an exam was taking place. Perhaps you thought the dentist was checking the work the hygienist had just completed. Not so. The dentist actually looks in your mouth for things that can affect your oral and your overall health. Many of these are things you can't see on your own, but that a dentist is trained to detect.

The dental cleaning and dental exam can catch problems early before you see or feel them when they are much easier and less expensive to treat.

Tooth Coloured Fillings

Composite fillings and fillings made out of glass ionomer materials are the same colour as your natural teeth.

When you go for a dental exam, your dentist checks your fillings and may suggest that you replace any loose or broken ones. Your dentist also looks for signs of decay, such as brown or black spots and may want to use X-rays to take a closer look at problem spots. If you have a cavity, your dentist may keep an eye on it (if it's small) or fill it right away. If a large cavity is not filled, it can get bigger and become more costly to fix.

Crowns and Implant Crowns

Even severely damaged teeth can be restored with aesthetic ceramic crowns that are strong, healthy, and beautiful. When a tooth is damaged beyond the point where a regular filling will suffice to repair the tooth a crown is the treatment of choice.

Crowns are often recommended for endodontically treated (root canal) teeth as the tooth structure of these teeth is most often compromised. With the new generation of materials and bonding agents the structural integrity of the tooth is enhanced.

Advanced porcelains are now stronger than ever, and wear and perform with the similar attributes of a natural tooth. In addition, these materials require much less of the tooth structure to be removed during preparation of the crown, resulting in a much more conservative. These innovative materials are non-metallic eliminating the black or blue edge that would normally show at the border of the crown. Non-metallic crowns look very much like a perfect, natural tooth.

Crowns are often used for the same purpose as veneers; sometimes the application of a crown is purely for cosmetic reasons. Crowns can also be recommended to refurbish a patient’s occlusion or bite that has been impaired due to tooth loss, tooth wear or tooth breakdown.

Bridges & Dentures - Replacing Missing Teeth

The best teeth are your own natural teeth. But sometimes, a tooth is badly damaged or lost. If a tooth is lost, it is important to replace it with an artificial tooth as soon as possible. This will prevent the teeth that are left from drifting out of line and possibly causing jaw problems.

Teeth that are out of line are harder to clean and are more likely to get periodontal disease (gum disease) and cavities. If one or more of your teeth are missing, the dentist may suggest replacing your missing teeth with a bridge or a denture. If you need to have a tooth (or teeth) replaced, we will explain the best options for you so that you can attain the smile you deserve.

Teeth Whitening (or bleaching) is one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments today; it is one of the most commonly requested services by our patients. Tooth Whitening can change the colour of one’s teeth by several shades. Even subtle changes in tooth colour can take years off a person’s appearance.

When used under the supervision and instruction of the dental team tooth bleaching is safe and does not harm the teeth or gums. Bleaching is not a permanent solution to changing the shade of one’s teeth. It may require touch-up applications to maintain the desired shade. These touch-up intervals like the initial treatment will depend on the individual patient’s situation.

We offer our full co-operation in making the most effective use of your dental benefit coverage. Our administrative staff will be glad to complete and forward dental claims for our patients. Many dental claims may be submitted electronically which greatly decreases time required to process payment of the claims. We can assist patients with general queries they may have regarding dental benefits. If your dental plan requires a "pre-determination of benefits" the staff will submit the necessary information for review by the benefit provider.

We direct bill most insurance providers and will manage the insurance side of things so you don't have to.
